Witnesses announced for "cramming" hearing
The Senate Commerce Committee released a list of witnesses set to testify next week in a hearing on unauthorized charges on landline telephone bills, a practice known as “cramming.”
Witnesses will be Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, President and CEO of the U.S. Telecom Association Walter McCormick Jr., Vermont Assistant Attorney General Elliot Burg, Xigo President David Spofford and Susan Eppley of Decatur, Georgia.
Xigo is a company that specializes in auditing telephone bills. Eppley will testify about her personal experience with how cramming can cost businesses money.
The hearing comes at the end of the committee’s yearlong investigation into cramming and its impact on consumers. Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) will release the investigation's findings at the hearing, which is scheduled for next Wednesday morning.
The Federal Communications Commission recently fined four wireless firms almost $12 million for cramming and will discuss new rules to crack down on the practice at next Thursday's open meeting.
