Yelp ready to attack Google

By Brendan Sasso - 09/21/11 09:36 AM ET

Jeremy Stoppelman, CEO of local-review site Yelp, will urge members of Congress Wednesday to take action against Internet giant Google, according to his prepared remarks.

"Today represents a rare opportunity for the government to protect innovation," he will say. "Allowing a search engine with monopoly market share to exploit and extend its dominance hampers entrepreneurial activity."

Stoppelman's chief complaint is that Google is using its position as the dominant search engine to conquer other markets, including news, shopping, travel and local business reviews.

He will charge that Google favors its own services over those of its competitors in its search results.

Stoppelman will make his remarks at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee's Antitrust subpanel. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt will make his own statement to the senators first.

The hearing is set for 2 p.m.
