Facebook honors military for Veteran's Day

By Gautham Nagesh - 11/08/11 03:51 PM ET

Facebook unveiled a new fan page, app and social media guide to honor military members and help them keep in touch with family and friends ahead of Veteran's Day.

“Everyday at USO Centers throughout the world, families stay connected during deployment using Facebook," said Alan Reyes, senior vice president of Operations for the USO.

"It is the most popular website among service members visiting our Centers in combat zones and it has proved to be a helpful tool for our staff to inform troops and their families about USO programs and services available to them worldwide."

The new U.S. Military on Facebook page is designed as a resource to help veterans, military members and their families stay connected online. Unlike the fan pages for the individual branches of the service, Facebook will control and operate the page.

Users can also download the A Nation Gives Thanks app, which allows them to send messages to friends and family members that are part of the military community.

Facebook is also teaming up with the nonprofit Blue Star Families to create a comprehensive guide for troops on using social media to stay connected.
