Apple will hold an event at the end of January in New York to make a major media-related announcement, according to a report from AllThingsD.
According to the report, the event will not be related to an upcoming release of the iPad 3, which is expected to take place at some point in 2012, or any other hardware.
That makes some sort of announcement involving publishing or online advertising the most likely, with Apple senior vice president of Internet software and services Eddy Cue reportedly involved.
The iPad was heralded at its release as a potential savior of the publishing industry, but firms' investments in elaborate iPad apps and iPad-focused publications have been decidedly mixed. The device, along with Amazon's Kindle and other e-readers, has helped spur sales of digital books.
