Google's privacy changes worry Rep. Markey

By Brendan Sasso - 01/25/12 11:25 AM ET

Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) said on Tuesday that Google's overhaul of its privacy policy raises "important questions" about how the company will handle its users' personal information.

"While it is undetermined at this point how the policy will impact specific Google services, it is imperative that users will be able to decide whether they want their information shared across the spectrum of Google’s offerings," Markey said. "As the company continues to flesh out its plans, I look forward to evaluating the changes to ensure consumers' privacy is protected.”

Markey is the co-chairman of the congressional privacy caucus.

Google announced on Tuesday that it will consolidate the separate policies of its various services into one main document.

The company said the change will make its privacy policy simpler and easier to understand, but many consumers are already expressing outrage.

The changes would allow Google to share information between its services. For example, users could begin seeing advertisements in Gmail based on videos they watched on YouTube.
