News bites: Microsoft buys AOL patents for $1 billion

AOL has agreed to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1 billion, Reuters reports.

Google executives will attend the White House Correspondents dinner this month, but the entertainment industry is still bitter about the company's role in defeating anti-piracy legislation earlier this year, The New York Times reports.

AT&T staved off a strike over the weekend and will continue talks with union officials about a new contract, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Human-rights groups are urging Britain to stop exporting surveillance technology to repressive regimes, The Guardian reports.

Twitter has spent more than $700,000 on lawsuits against five alleged spammers, Marketing Land reports.
