Theft of LinkedIn passwords also affected dating site eHarmony

By Brendan Sasso - 06/07/12 09:54 AM ET

Dating site eHarmony acknowledged late Wednesday that hackers stole some of its users' passwords.

The data breach is believed to be the work of the same hackers who stole passwords to social networking site LinkedIn.

Reports indicate that hackers posted about 1.5 million eHarmony passwords to underground Web forums on Wednesday, along with 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords.

The subscription dating site has about 20 million total users.

In a blog post, eHarmony said it reset the passwords of the affected users. They will receive an email with instructions to create new passwords.

The company said it is continuing to investigate the incident.

The high-profile attacks have raised concerns on Capitol Hill, with some lawmakers renewing their call for data security legislation.
