Report: Microsoft faces EU antitrust complaint

By Brendan Sasso - 09/18/12 12:23 PM ET

European regulators plan to file an antitrust complaint against Microsoft for restricting users' choice of Web browsers, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the case.

The complaint will allege that Microsoft violated a 2009 agreement that required them to offer Windows users a choice of Web browsers in addition to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, according to the report.

The complaint could lead to hefty fines.

Microsoft said in July that it failed to offer browser choice software to about 28 million Windows users as the result of a technical glitch. The company apologized for the error and said it had already taken steps to fix the problem.

Microsoft's efforts to boost Internet Explorer also led to its legal battles with the U.S. Justice Department about a decade ago.
