Brazil detains Google exec for not taking down videos

By Brendan Sasso - 09/27/12 11:08 AM ET

Brazilian police detained Google's top executive in the country on Wednesday after the company failed to take down YouTube videos.

Police questioned Fábio José Silva Coelho and then released him later in the day, Reuters reported.

Brazilian electoral law strictly limits what people can say on television, radio and the Internet about a candidate ahead of an election. Google has refused to take down videos that allegedly violate that ban.

According to The Associated Press, a judge ordered Google on Tuesday to remove videos that comment on a paternity suit aimed at a candidate for mayor in the city of Campo Grande.

The company is also fighting an order to remove a controversial anti-Islam video.

A Google spokeswoman said the company is appealing the decision.

"[A]s a platform, we are not responsible for the content uploaded to our site," the spokeswoman said in a statement.
