News bites: Facebook passes 1 billion users

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social media site now has more than 1 billion active users worldwide.

The New York Times reports that hackers breached the personal records of 53 universities.

Sprint has few options for expansion now that T-Mobile is buying MetroPCS, The Wall Street Journal writes.

Facebook plans to let users pay to promote their own posts, according to the AP.

Google said it will cut more jobs at its Motorola Mobility unit than it previously planned, Reuters reports.

HP stock plunged after CEO Meg Whitman told investors it will take a long time to turn the company around, The Wall Street Journal reports.
