News bites: Twitter, Facebook served as information hubs during storm

New Yorkers turned to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to receive and send out updates about the storm rather than rely solely on TV and radio, The Wall Street Journal reports. 

While companies scrambled to save Internet systems from going down during Hurricane Sandy, some websites suffered outages anyway, The New York Times writes.

Although mobile networks held up relatively well during Sandy, most people struggled to maintain the battery power in their smartphones and tablets, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A Huawei executive said the company is sending engineers to speak with a German security researcher who exposed vulnerabilities in its routers, Reuters says.

Facebook employees will be able to cash in their stock as three key lockup dates are set to expire, according to CNET.
