House Dems push for hearing on Sandy's effect on communications networks
A group of top Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee is calling for a hearing to be held on the effect Hurricane Sandy had on the reliability of Internet, mobile, telephone and other communications networks after the massive storm whipped across the East Coast.
In a letter sent to committee chairman Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Communications and Technology subpanel chairman Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), the Democrats emphasized that network outages put lives at risk and noted that the storm knocked out 25 percent of cell towers in the affected areas. A hearing would let lawmakers examine vulnerabilities found in wireless and mobile networks during the storm and help with preparation for the next one, they argued.
The letter was signed by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the committee, Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), the ranking member of Walden's subpanel, Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) and Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.).
The Democratic lawmakers said they also want to examine the performance of wireless networks during and after the storm.
"We are concerned by accounts suggesting that those with corded telephones running on copper-line networks were able to communicate while those relying on wireless services or fiber-optic cables were not," they wrote.
