News bites: Judge approves Facebook privacy settlement

A federal judge gave preliminary approval to Facebook's settlement of a class-action suit over violating its users' privacy with "sponsored story" ads, The San Jose Mercury News reports.  

Court cases are challenging the power of border agents to search people's devices, The New York Times writes. 

Yahoo says a $2.7 billion ruling against the company in Mexico is flawed, according to Reuters. 

A Seattle judge denied Motorola Mobility's request for an injunction against Microsoft over standard essential patents, The Wall Street Journal reports. 

The Associated Press examines the demise of The Daily, the first iPad-only newspaper.
