1.1 million tweets sent during inauguration

By Brendan Sasso - 01/21/13 04:40 PM ET

Twitter said on Monday that 1.1 million people tweeted messages during President Obama's second inauguration.

The figure easily surpassed the 82,392 tweets sent during the inaugural ceremony four years ago.

Although there was more excitement for Obama's first inauguration, the social media service was still in its infancy in 2009.

The most tweets came during the end of the speech, when Obama urged people not to "mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate."

The moment generated 27,795 tweets per minute, according to Twitter.

The top moment in 2009 was when Obama took the oath of office, which generated 3,210 tweets per minute, the site said.
