News bites: Waste seen in Internet access program

By Brendan Sasso - 02/12/13 10:11 AM ET

Local phone companies have complained of waste and unfair competition in the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, according to The New York Times.

The Federal Communications Commission's Lifeline program continues to provide phones to people who shouldn't receive them, The Wall Street Journal discovered.

Automakers are concerned that the FCC's push to broaden Wi-Fi could disrupt accident-prevention technology, Bloomberg writes.

Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen told AllThingsD that he is not trying to kill advertising. He also revealed the company bought Blockbuster to open stores that sell wireless products.

The FCC spent $10 million on a network security project, but is still vulnerable to hackers, Ars Technica explains.
