News bites: Groupon fires CEO Mason

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason announced that he had been fired in a colorful letter to employees.

The Associated Press notes that Groupon still faces underlying problems with its online deal business model.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski told TechCrunch he plans to investigate whether he has the power to overturn the ban on unlocking cellphones.

The U.S. government won an appeal in its battle to extradite Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom from New Zealand, The Wall Street Journal reports. 

Google contributed $25,000 to honor Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz while it was under investigation, Bloomberg writes. 

European Union antitrust regulators plan to fine Microsoft before the end of March, according to Reuters.
