Apple's top lobbyist nominated to State Department post

President Obama on Tuesday nominated Catherine Ann Novelli, the head of Apple's worldwide lobbying efforts, to a State Department post.

Novelli would serve as the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, putting her in charge of the department's efforts to promote economic growth and handle policy on energy, agriculture, oceans and technology.

She has worked as Apple's vice president of worldwide government affairs since 2007. Before that, she was a partner at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, and has also served in the U.S Trade Representative's Office and at the Commerce Department.

Although Apple is one of the world's largest companies, it has kept a relatively low-profile in Washington. It has spent only $1.4 million on lobbying in the first half of this year, compared with Google's $6.7 million.
