Chinese government censors Obama's open Internet remarks

By Kim Hart - 11/17/09 11:11 AM ET

The Chinese government censored President Barack Obama's comments about open Internet practicies yesterday, according to a Washington Post story today.

Yesterday, we reported that Obama spoke out against censorship and in favor of free flowing speech online in a town hall meeting with students in Shanghai.

News outlets reportedly downplayed Obama's visit altogether. As reporter Keith Richburg writes:

"Most Chinese never heard the president's remarks, because the only television station to carry it live, Shanghai Television, has limited reach, and the station's normally live Web site showed a children's program instead. Also, news sites that posted stories about Obama's remarks on Internet freedom deleted them about an hour later."
