BlackBerry experiences widespread outage

By Jordan Fabian - 12/23/09 11:59 AM ET

Research In Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry, on Wednesday said a service disruption that began yesterday may have been caused by a new version of a popular application.

The company said its new version of Messenger software, which it has asked customers to download this month, may be to blame.

The outage affected BlackBerry smartphones across North America, including Washington, D.C., a town known for its prevalent use of the devices.

Phone and text messaging on BlackBerrys were not affected by the outage.
