Tessera loses patent case at ITC

By Ian Swanson - 12/30/09 05:26 PM ET

Tessera Technologies announced Wednesday that the International Trade Commission had rejected its patent infringement claim against several rival companies.

The ITC ruled that Tessera had not sufficiently proved infringement on two of the three patents it had questioned.

Tessara had hoped its complaint would allow it to gain new revenue from makers of computer memory chips, including Acer Inc. and Nanya Technology Corp.

Tessara President and CEO Henry Norhhaft expressed disappointment with the decision and said the company was reviewing a possible appeal.

Business Week reported that Tessera shares dropped 8.6 percent in trading on Wednesday.

Tech companies have increasingly gone to the ITC to battle over patents. On Tuesday, Nokia filed an ITC case against Apple charging patent infringement, while Prism Technologies filed suit against Research in Motion, the maker of the Blackberry.
