Clinton wants Google explanation from China

By Ian Swanson - 01/13/10 10:08 AM ET

Cyber attacks on Google in China that appeared to target human rights activists demands an explanation, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday.

In a statement, Clinton said State Department officials had been briefed by Google on the allegations, which she said raise very serious concerns and questions.

The charges come ahead of an address Clinton is scheduled to make on Internet freedom.

Clinton dined last week with senior Google officials, including CEO Eric Schmidt.

Here’s her full statement:

"We have been briefed by Google on these allegations, which raise very serious concerns and questions. We look to the Chinese government for an explanation. The ability to operate with confidence in cyberspace is critical in a modern society and economy. I will be giving an address next week on the centrality of internet freedom in the 21st century, and we will have further comment on this matter as the facts become clear"
