Kerry thanks telecom firms for help in Haiti

By Kim Hart - 01/15/10 10:06 AM ET

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) praised efforts by the telecommunications industry to provide equipment and assistance to Haiti after the earthquake. The industry also launched a massive fundraising effort Wednesday that became the biggest day in history for charity generated over mobile phones.

"I'm in touch with industry leaders to try and mobilze more resources faster and greatly appreciate their efforts," said Kerry, chair of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet. "We will neeed to help tomorrow, and the day after. Next month and the month after. And far into next year."

Satellite companies provided much of the communications services in the first few days after the devastating earthquake. And over the next few weeks, non-governmental organizations are establishing wireless networks and distributing devices.

Verizon and AT&T have contributed through their foundations. And many carriers have set up text message campaigns to contribute to humanitarian organizations, like the Red Cross and non-profit Yele Haiti.

You can text "90999" to donate $10 to the Red Cross or text "Yele" to "501501" to donate $5 to Yele Haiti.

Satellite firms Iridium, CapRock Government Services and Inmarsat are supporting government relief efforts in Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic.

Kerry thanked these companies for "stepping up to the plate."
