Apple, Google make gains in smartphone market
RIM, the maker of BlackBerry, maintained its lead with the most widely used mobile smartphone operating system in the U.S. in Decemer 2009 with about 42 percent of the market share. Apple's iPhone ranked second with 25 percent share, ComScore reported today.
Microsoft and Palm followed with Google coming in last, with a little over five percent share.
Google's standing continues to improve, however. The last three months of 2009 showed a gain of nearly 3 percent market share. That's a quick clip considering how new to the market Google's operating system is compared to the likes of RIM.
In fact, Apple and Google are the only smartphone makers to enjoy an increase in market share during the period at the expense of more established brands RIM, Microsoft and Palm.
In the halls of Capitol Hill, though, BlackBerry is still king. We're still waiting for President Obama to make headlines by trading out his BlackBerry for an iPhone.
