Americans could be saying goodbye to Monday Memorial Day celebrations and “aloha” to observing the holiday on different days of the week each year, if Rep. Colleen Hanabusa has her way.
The Hawaii Democrat is introducing a bill Thursday that would mark the holiday each year on May 30.
The congresswoman says due to the date change “many Americans have begun to celebrate the long weekend as the beginning of summer rather than honoring those who died courageously in battle.”
Memorial Day is considered by many to be the annual kick-off to the summer grilling and pool season.
Former Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), who died last year, also pushed for the Memorial Day change during his more than 50-year career in Congress.
