The daughter of former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman is revealing she’s a Type 1 diabetic.
In a Tuesday piece for The Huffington Post, Liddy Huntsman writes that for 18 years she was “embarrassed to admit I was different from everyone I went to school with.”
Huntsman, who along with her two elder sisters drew attention for their media-savvy YouTube videos and tweets during their dad’s presidential campaign, says above all, she was “embarrassed that people might label me only as the diabetic girl.”
The former Utah governor’s daughter says the disease — which affects as many as three million Americans, according to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation — took an emotional toll, and she was embarrassed to “sneak off to a the bathroom at unusual times to inject myself” with insulin.
Huntsman, who dubs herself a “Gen X activist” on the Huffington Post, does add some humor into the otherwise poignant piece, writing, “I think the majority of my life I have been apologizing for comments I’ve made when my blood sugar was totally out of sync. Fortunately for me, everyone is always apologizing for inappropriate comments on a presidential campaign, so that was the only time I ever fit in.”
The University of Pennsylvania grad says she’s now “finally not embarrassed” to reveal her disease, saying, “It sounds ludicrous when I say it out loud, but I think most people struggle with accepting something they think is unconventional about themselves.”
