Ted Turner turned to a surprising confidant to share the news that he wanted to ask Jane Fonda out on a date: former President Jimmy Carter.

Calling the CNN and Turner Broadcasting founder one of his “best friends,” the ex-commander in chief reveals in the documentary, “Ted Turner: The Maverick Man”: “He and I were both fishing for bass. And he told me he had just heard Jane Fonda was going to get a divorce from her husband, and he was going to ask her for a date.”

Although the couple married in 1991 before divorcing 10 years later, Turner, 74, says in the doc that he still loves the actress “to this very day.”

The special, reported by Wolf Blitzer, premieres Sunday on CNN.
