The first lady took questions from children after reading them " 'Twas the night before Christmas."
She said her favorite gift as a child was something Barbie-related.
"I'm sure it was some Barbie-related thing when I was little. I loved Barbie dolls, and I had everything Barbie," she said. "I had the town house, the car, the little outfits and the shoes that never stayed on her feet."
First dogs Bo and Sunny were along for the visit, although there were no reports of problems from Sunny, who lunged at a small child during a White House event last week, causing the girl to fall.
Obama said the presidential pets would find chew toys under the Christmas tree.
The first lady also said her upcoming birthday, when she turns "50 and fabulous," would involve dancing. She turns 50 on January 17.
