Former Rep. Reynolds deported from Zimbabwe

Former Rep. Mel Reynolds (D-Ill.) learned this month that Zimbabwe is no Las Vegas.

Sin City’s motto is “What happens here, stays here.” Reynolds’s trip to Zimbabwe, in contrast, attracted headlines around the globe.

The ex-legislator was deported Monday, after he pleaded guilty to overstaying his visa. He was given a choice of paying a $100 fine or imprisonment for five days. Reynolds chose wisely and shelled out the cash.

Allegations surfaced he racked up thousands of dollars in unpaid hotel bills. He also initially faced charges of possessing pornography, which is illegal in Zimbabwe. Those charges were dismissed, after a judge ruled the police did not follow proper procedures.
