What's a top House Republican to do when he finds out that Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric ShinsekiEric ShinsekiHouse approves VA bill, sending it to Trump Senate backs bill making it easier to fire VA employees Shulkin confirmed to lead Dept. of Veterans Affairs MORE resigned?

How about take a shot at the president?

House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), asked about his reaction to the resignation in the Capitol, told reporters he'd found out from them.

“Oh, did he resign?” McKeon said, before conferring briefly with an aide.

“I feel kind of like the president,” McKeon then added. “I'm learning everything from the press.”

The California Republican, who had already called for Shinseki's resignation, later said that he thought the retired general was making the right move.

But he also made it pretty clear that he was proud of his ability to think on his feet.

“They asked me what my reaction was to Gen. Shinseki's resignation. My reaction was: I just learned from the press, like the president does,” McKeon said to a late-coming reporter. “I think that's a great reaction.”
