Shuler ruptures heel ligament

By Christina Wilkie - 11/18/09 09:55 AM ET

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) was spotted in the Capitol with a cast on his left foot on Tuesday, and his spokesman confirmed that the former NFL quarterback ruptured his plantar fascia heel ligament during the
4th annual Longest Yard Congressional Football Game in late October.

Shuler won the game's MVP trophy after leading the congressional team to victory over the Capitol Police for the first time in the contest's history, completing 29 of 42 passes.

This isn't Shuler's first encounter with plantar fasciitis: the chronic, painful ligament tear forced the lawmaker to retire from the NFL in 1998 after playing five seasons with the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, and Oakland Raiders.

His spokesman declined to say how long Shuler expects to be in a cast.
