Commerce Secretary gets a birthday surprise

It wasn’t your typical office birthday party for Commerce Secretary Gary Locke Thursday afternoon.

First Lady Michelle Obama dropped by the Commerce Department to wish her “fellow Capricorn” a happy birthday and tell him to keep up the good work. In the department’s balcony-lined theater, Obama asked half-seriously, “he doesn't look a day over 30, 35, right?”

The civil servants exploded with laughter. Locke turned 60 Thursday.

“Whatever the number, my husband and I wish you a happy birthday, and we are so proud of the work that you're doing here at the Department of Commerce,” Obama said.

In his earlier introduction, Locke complimented the first lady for "blazing a path in high style."

Obama celebrated her own birthday in style earlier this week. The president organized a surprise party for his wife at Restaurant Nora, complete with friends from Washington, several of the couple's good friends from Chicago.
