Family tragedy strikes Rep. Young

By Christina Wilkie - 02/25/10 03:31 PM ET

Rep. Bill Young (R-Fla.) has suffered two painful losses in the past few weeks.

The first was the death of his old friend, Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), who died Feb. 9 of complications following surgery. Young and Murtha served together on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee for more than 20 years, and their families are close.

Earlier this month, Young's son, Billy, and his daughter-in-law Ashley, suffered the loss of twins. Their baby girls were born 16 weeks prematurely. Young said Wednesday on the House floor that the babies lived only for a few hours.

Murtha was laid to rest in Johnstown, Pa.,  on Feb. 16, but Young was unable to attend because he was tending to his family.

Condolences to the congressman and his family.
