Attempted kidnapper arrested outside Capitol

Capitol Police tracked down and charged a young woman on Monday evening with aggravated assault and two instances of attempted kidnapping just blocks from the Capitol.

A man flagged down Capitol Police officer Jason Packer at around 5 p.m. just outside of the Capitol South Metro station, saying that a woman had attempted to kidnap his two children by forcefully removing them from their stroller and when that failed, she attempted to pull the entire stroller away from the woman who had been caring for them while assaulting her.

The suspect, Crystal Ann Barnes, was tracked down by police in the Capitol South Metro station, where she was positively identified by the victim. Capitol Police arrested Barnes, a 23-year old Maryland resident, and transported her to Capitol Police headquarters for processing.
