One of Washington’s best-loved (and hard-to-get) dishes, navy bean soup from the White House mess, got some new competition this week.

On Wednesday, the West Wing kitchen rolled out a brand-new, never-before-seen Soup of the Day (drum roll, please): chicken spinach.

The dish, which originated in eastern China, combines its two namesake ingredients in a broth flavored with soy sauce, sugar and scallions. It was prepared by chefs from the U.S. Navy, which staffs and operates the restaurant.

The verdict? According to one White House staffer, two thumbs up.

“It was more flavorful than I expected, and it made for a good lunch on a rainy day,” he told ITK.
