As a former intern on Capitol Hill, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) knows first-hand how long the dog days of summer can be in steamy D.C.
So the senator decided to treat her colleagues to a taste of North Carolina's finest on Wednesday, getting behind the counter to serve up a barbecue lunch at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters.
Hagan joined two professional chefs from Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro, N.C., who made the five-hour drive to Washington Wednesday morning bearing barbecue treasure.
On the menu? Carolina pulled pork sandwiches, cole slaw, hush puppies, banana pudding, and sweet tea.
Unlike the sweet, tomato-based sauce of traditional Texas barbecue, Carolina "Q" is doused with a mustard and vinegar-based sauce.
But the pork isn't Hagan's favorite part of a barbecue feast. The lawmaker is partial to hush puppies (deep-fried cornmeal) and sweet tea.
