"We've seen Rubio has those cute new boots, and I don't want to be outdone," Paul, who stands at 5 feet, 8 inches, said in a video
posted to Twitter, showing him picking out a pair of boots. "Eat your heart out @marcorubio!" the tweet added.
Rubio was photographed earlier this week wearing boots with sturdy heels in the early-voting state of New Hampshire, where candidates are vying for position ahead of the Feb. 9 primary.
"A Vote for Marco Rubio Is a Vote for Men’s High-Heeled Booties," Sen. Ted Cruz's (Texas) communications director Rick Tyler tweeted
Tuesday, linking to an article about Rubio's boots.
"Are you kidding me? Did he really wear that on the campaign trail?" MSNBC co-host Joe Scarborough asked Wednesday during a segment
on "Morning Joe," busting into laughter.
"This is straight out of an Austin Powers movie," Scarborough said. "They're shagalicious!"
Other candidates also weighed in on Rubio's boots.
Rubio will return to the Granite State on Thursday for a pair of events after campaigning in Iowa and Texas this week.
