Top-secret members of Congress go crazy for bipartisan cupcakes

By Judy Kurtz - 11/06/12 02:18 PM ET

Turns out bipartisanship is alive and well in Congress — at least, when it comes to the important issue of devouring delicious cupcakes.

Sprinkles Cupcakes, which calls itself the “progenitor of the gourmet cupcake craze," challenged members of Congress earlier this fall to “sweeten party politics” by gifting one another a box containing a dozen of the baked goods. But there was one caveat to the complimentary cupcakes — lawmakers had to bestow the tasty treats on a colleague from an opposing party.

While members might clash when it comes to politics, they can come together in the name of cupcakes. We hear that Sprinkles, which has a store in Georgetown, received 124 orders. Sixty-six requests came from Republicans gifting Democrats, while 58 Democrats wanted the frosting-topped goodies delivered to Republicans.

There is a cupcake mystery, however, because the dessert donors are being kept classified. Sprinkles contends that the Ethics Committees has requested that the company not name any names and out the undercover congressional cupcake gift-givers.
