Angle tweeted Wednesday that he is supporting Rubio in the Republican presidential race.
“I am proud to be a part of @marcorubio 's campaign team,” Angle wrote. “He's the one that can bring this country back on its feet.”
Angle, an accomplished amateur wrestler, won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
He then moved over to the staged world of World Wrestling Entertainment’s professional wrestling, winning most of WWE’s top accolades and headlining major events from 1999 to 2006.
Donald Trump, one of Rubio’s opponents for the GOP nomination, has strong connections to pro wrestling himself.
Trump faced off with WWE owner Vince McMahon at 2007’s WrestleMania event. Each man sent out a proxy fighter in what was termed “the battle of the billionaires.”
Controversial and legendary pro wrestler Hulk Hogan said in the summer that he wants to be Trump’s running mate if the businessman is nominated by the GOP.
