A congressman who made headlines earlier this year when he brought Elmo out on the House floor is keeping mum about the resignation of Kevin Clash, the longtime voice of the famed “Sesame Street” puppet, amid new sex allegations.
Clash resigned from the children’s show on Tuesday after being accused of having sex with an underage teenager, according to The Associated Press. The allegation comes a week after another man made a similar charge against the puppeteer. That man recanted his story a day later.
In January, Rep. Keith Ellison brought the furry red monster with him to the House floor. The Minnesota Democrat used Elmo as a prop to help illustrate the difference between the smiling “Sesame Street” regular and a character from a controversial Palestinian T.V. program.
Ellison, who declined to comment to ITK about Clash’s resignation, said of Elmo at the time, “As we all know, this is Elmo. This guy taught us our 1,2,3's, but he also taught us tolerance and understanding.”
