Senator congratulates dad on Hall of Fame induction

By Judy Kurtz - 11/27/12 10:58 AM ET

altSen. John Thune will soon become the son of a South Dakota Sports Hall of Famer.

Harold Thune, the dad of the Mount Rushmore State Republican, was just announced as one of the upcoming inductees into the group of elite athletes.

As a high school student, Thune, who turns 93 next month, was a top scorer in the 1937 state finals basketball tournament. He later spent 20 years teaching and coaching players at a South Dakota high school.

On Monday, the 51-year-old senator wrote on Twitter, “Congratulations to my dad and the rest [of] the SD Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Good luck hoops teams across SD, practice starts today.”

The lawmaker was a standout himself as a high school hoops star. The younger Thune tells ITK in an email, “Dad was an exceptional three-sport athlete who instilled in all of us kids the importance of hard work and team play. I am very proud of his induction into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.”

Thune, along with 10 other sports stars, is poised to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in April.
