Congressman-elect's father-in-law officiates his wedding

By Judy Kurtz - 12/03/12 11:38 AM ET

When he reports for work in Washington next month, Rep.-elect Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) will be sporting a new accessory: a wedding band.

The soon-to-be congressman, who won the seat of the retiring Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) on Election Day, wed Lauren Anne Birchfield in a California ceremony over the weekend, according to local reports.

Birchfield’s father, Rev. Jim Birchfield, officiated the Saturday nuptials in the bride’s home state.

Kennedy, 32, is the grandson of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.) and the son of former Rep. Joe Kennedy II (D-Mass.).

The couple, who met at Harvard Law School, had been dating for five years and had been engaged since January.

Love appears to be in the air among the Kennedy clan. Joe Kennedy’s twin brother, Matthew, tied the knot with Katherine Lee Manning, director of public affairs at The Glover Park Group, in Hyannis Port over the summer.
