Avid hockey fan in Congress laments NHL lockout

By Judy Kurtz - 12/04/12 04:02 PM ET

Arguably one of the biggest hockey fanatics on Capitol Hill is calling the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout “tough" to take.

The NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) are poised to meet Tuesday to discuss the ongoing labor dispute, which will soon enter its third month.

In an email to ITK, Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) equated the situation to the friction in Washington: “Like lawmakers here in D.C., the NHL and the NHLPA have some big issues to address, and both sides need to come to the table soon ready for serious negotiation.”

He added, “They are playing a dangerous game if they think the fans will just stick it out.”

But the puck-loving congressman, 54, who has said he’s had “hundreds of stitches” from working his way around the rink, is still getting his hockey fix on his own. Quigley tells us while the lockout’s been going on, he’s been skating each weekend in Chicago and joining in on some hockey-related events for charity.
