Congressman-elect tries inventing reindeer-milk cheese

By Judy Kurtz - 12/26/12 12:11 PM ET

A new dairy product might have hit the shelves if Rep.-elect Kerry Bentivolio’s attempt at creating it had been triumphant.

The Michigan Republican, who won former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter’s (R-Mich.) seat following the congressman’s July resignation, is the proud owner of Old Fashion Santa & Co., and acquired half a dozen reindeer for the operation. “We were going to experiment to make reindeer-milk cheese, but you can’t get the reindeer to milk properly,” he explained to National Review Online, “they start kicking and stuff.”

Despite the lack of success in the cheese department, Bentivolio — who also dons a Santa Claus outfit as an impersonator for Christmastime festivities — defended his furry fleet, which includes two unnamed animals along with Rumples, The Crazy One, Aurora and Bull.

“If somebody calls you crazy, you’re on to something,” he tells the magazine. “It’s not a bad thing. Consider it a compliment. So I guess that’s why it didn’t really bother me when people were saying, ‘That guy’s kooky because he has reindeer.’ No, they’re kooky because they don’t have ‘em.”
