Bieber urges lawmakers to act after paparazzo’s death

By Judy Kurtz - 01/02/13 04:21 PM ET

Justin Bieber is getting political — calling on lawmakers to pass “meaningful legislation” following the death of a paparazzo who was killed while he allegedly was trying to snap a photograph of the pop star.

The photographer died Tuesday after reportedly being hit by a car. The cameraman was crossing a street, trying to return to his own vehicle after attempting to take a photo of Bieber’s Ferrari while it was stopped on a Los Angeles freeway. Bieber was not driving his vehicle at the time.

In a statement released Wednesday, the “Beauty and a Beat” singer, 18, said his “thoughts and prayers” were with the victim’s family.

“Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders and the photographers themselves," Bieber said.
