Sens. Shelby and Coats bet on BCS National Championship

By Daniel Strauss - 01/04/13 06:34 PM ET

Sens. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and Dan Coats (R-Ind.) have officially made their bets on the 2013 BCS National Championship.

If the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the University of Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday, Shelby will give Coats's office Dreamland BBQ from Tuscaloosa, Ala. If Alabama beats Notre Dame, Coats will give Shelby's office chocolate from the South Bend Chocolate Co.

"As good as the Crimson Tide have been in recent seasons, this year belongs to Brian Kelly and Notre Dame," Coats said in a joint statement.

"This is a long-anticipated clash of college football’s two most storied programs," Shelby said in the same statement.

The match is between the two top-ranked teams in college football. Notre Dame has had a 12-0 record, while Alabama, the defending BCS champion, had just one loss to Texas A&M University. In both the BCS standings and The Associated Press's Top 25, Notre Dame is ranked first and Alabama a close second.
