Ousted lawmaker to focus on flying, cows

By Judy Kurtz - 01/10/13 02:32 PM ET

Former Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) has gone from dealing with legislation to handling cows.

The eight-term congressman, who lost his reelection bid in November to Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) after redistricting, is back on the farm after returning from Washington.

“I’ve got an old airplane I’ll fly a little bit, I hope, and be around the farm and try not to get in the way of the people doing the hard work and help where I can,” Boswell, 78, tells Des Moines's WHO-TV.

“For example, we’re going to be selling some calves this week and for the first time in a long time I want to be able to help load them up and take them to town.”

While the longtime lawmaker and dad of three says he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family, he expects that the switch from shuttling back and forth to Capitol Hill to staying put in cattle country will be “a big adjustment.”
