Congressman trades lawmaker for baker

By Judy Kurtz - 01/31/13 11:19 AM ET

Add “baker” to Rep. Mike Quigley’s seemingly ever-expanding resume.

The Illinois Democrat tested out his rolling pin skills earlier this week as he made doughnuts and decorated tarts at Dinkel’s Bakery in Chicago.

Quigley’s stint as a baking assistant was part of his “undercover congressman” series, which takes him out of the Longworth House Office Building and pits him in different (and sometimes rather unique) jobs around the Prairie State. So far, Quigley has worked as a pizza deliveryman, a pinball machine assemblyman, a zookeeper, a mailman, and a sanitation department worker.

The congressman said in a news release about his latest baking adventure, “Working alongside local business owners and their employees is more valuable than reading any memo in D.C.”
