Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton lose out at Grammy Awards

By Judy Kurtz - 02/11/13 10:50 AM ET

It’s not your typical competition between couples, but in the Grammy Award showdown, President Obama still has the edge over the first lady.

Michelle Obama failed to pick up her first trophy at Sunday’s award ceremony. The commander in chief’s spouse, who didn’t attend the Los Angeles shindig, was nominated for music’s highest honor in the Best Spoken Word Album category, for the audio version of her book American Grown. The Grammy instead went to singer Janis Ian for Society’s Child: My Autobiography.

Obama wasn’t the only White House resident to compete in the Spoken Word category this year. Former President Bill Clinton was also nominated for Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy.

The Obama-Clinton showdown was a rematch of sorts from 2008, when the president faced off against Clinton in the same category. Obama picked up his second Grammy that year for the audio edition of his tome The Audacity of Hope. He had also won a 2006 Grammy for Dreams from my Father.
