Group calls on Obama to 'show us your cuts' for Mardi Gras
On Tuesday, the country will experience a curious combination of deadly seriousness and unbridled frivolity, as President Obama's State of the Union address (that's the serious thing) falls on Mardi Gras (that's the fun one).
One group will boldly dare to see if the two events can be combined. Bankrupting America, a project of Public Notice that has called for cuts to wasteful federal spending to help balance the budget, will be handing out Mardi Gras beads and doughnuts at the Capitol South subway stop in Washington, D.C.
The group will also be calling on Obama to "show us your cuts."
That's a play on the Mardi Gras tradition in which some revelers hand out beads and in return are shown ... let's just call it other revelers in various stages of undress.
Bankrupting America says the Obama administration could be a little more flirty when it comes to revealing what programs it might cut.
"We've heard a lot of empty rhetoric about reducing the debt, but we've seen very little action to get our spending under control," said Public Notice Executive Director Gretchen Hamel. "Americans aren't looking for another tax hike — they're looking for their leaders in Washington to stop adding to the debt and agree on a long-term plan to spend our tax dollars responsibly. That's why we're going to Capitol Hill to tell Washington to 'Show Us Your Cuts!' "
There's even a Twitter hashtag, #ShowUsYourCuts!
Now, it remains to be seen whether Obama will earn his beads Tuesday night.
