Did first lady's makeup artist know about Oscar appearance? He won't say

By Judy Kurtz - 02/27/13 12:35 PM ET

Makeup artist Carl Ray is staying mum about whether he knew he was getting Michelle Obama glam for the Academy Awards on Sunday night.

The first lady’s longtime personal makeup guru wouldn’t reveal if he was in on the big secret when Obama made a surprise appearance at the annual awards show.

She announced “Argo” as the Best Picture winner after opening the envelope via satellite from the White House.

Obama sported a pale pink lip and smoky eye look for Hollywood’s most prestigious event. Ray, who paints the faces of other Washington power players (including House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor) at the Four Seasons Hotel’s George Salon in Georgetown, tells us in an email, “The first lady was Red Carpet ready and looked absolutely stunning for her appearance at the Oscars!”

Ray, who confirms he was the one behind Obama’s makeup for the big night, calls it “an honor and personal highlight to be a small but beautiful part of the first lady’s surprise appearance.”
